Files Missing After a Windows Update? How to Find and Recover Them
Asoftech |
If your documents or photos seem to have disappeared after a Windows update or upgrade, do not assume they were deleted. They may be in another account, a temporary profile, an old installation folder or a backup. Follow these checks in order, and limit new writes to the affected drive until you know where the files are.
1. Protect the files that may still be on the drive
Avoid installing programs, downloading large files or running cleanup tools on the drive that held the missing data. If Windows says you are signed in with a temporary profile, first copy any new work from that session to an external drive before signing out. Microsoft warns that work in a temporary profile can be lost on sign-out.
2. Check the account and search the whole PC
Confirm you signed into the same Windows account as before the update. Open File Explorer and search This PC for a distinctive filename or extension; check Desktop, Documents, Pictures and Downloads under each relevant user folder. Also inspect OneDrive or other cloud folders and their online recycle bins if you used them. A blank desktop by itself does not prove the files are gone.
3. Look for Windows.old and existing backups
After some upgrades, personal files may be temporarily available under C:\Windows.old\Users\. If that folder exists, copy the files you need to a separate drive promptly: Microsoft says it is usually removed after 10 days. Windows.old is not created by every installation or reset. Check File History, external backups and cloud version history before attempting recovery.
4. Scan only if the files are still missing
If the files were deleted from local storage, consider Asoftech Data Recovery for documents and mixed files, or Asoftech Photo Recovery for pictures and camera media. Check each product’s supported devices and file systems first. Install on a healthy, separate drive, scan the affected drive, preview or inspect results, and save recovered files to another physical drive. Recovery is not guaranteed, especially after overwriting or SSD TRIM.
5. Verify the results and preserve a backup
Open important documents, inspect photos at full size and play videos at several points. Compare with a known backup where possible. Keep the original drive unchanged until you have verified the copies. If the drive makes unusual noises, disconnects repeatedly or has physical damage, stop using it and seek professional help.
Frequently asked questions
Did the update delete my files?
A missing file may simply be in another profile or folder. Check those locations and backups first. If the file was actually deleted, continued use of the drive can reduce recovery chances.
