What to Do Before a Data Recovery Scan: A Practical Checklist
Asoftech |
Deleted an important folder or lost photos from a memory card? Before starting a data recovery scan, protect the storage device and decide where recovered files will go. These preparation steps help avoid overwriting missing data and make it easier to choose the right recovery approach.
1. Stop writing to the affected drive
Do not download files, install software, or save recovered data on the drive that lost files. Stop taking pictures on an affected memory card. Avoid formatting, initializing, or running repair tools before securing your data. If the affected drive contains Windows, continued computer use also creates writes; use another computer to prepare recovery where possible.
2. Check existing copies first
Look in the Recycle Bin, backup drives, and any cloud service you already use. Check its deleted-items folder and version history if available. Search for the original filename in case the file was moved. Copy a usable backup to a healthy drive and open it before deciding whether a scan is necessary.
3. Prepare the source and destination
Note the affected drive's label, capacity, and drive letter so you select the correct device. Prepare a different physical drive with enough free space for the files you want to restore. Another partition on the same disk is not a suitable recovery destination. If the source clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or is detected unreliably, stop and seek a professional assessment.
4. Choose a recovery tool and scan
For documents and mixed file types, review Asoftech Data Recovery. Check the supported file systems and system requirements on the product page before downloading. Then follow this workflow:
Install the recovery software on a healthy drive, separate from the source.
Connect the affected device using a stable connection; use a card reader for a removable memory card.
Select the affected drive, scan it, and review the files found. Save selected results to the separate destination drive.
If your priority is lost pictures, review Asoftech Photo Recovery. Scan the supported card or drive, preview available photos, and save the results elsewhere. A preview helps you select images, but you still need to check the saved files.
5. Verify results before reusing the source
Open recovered documents, inspect photos at full size, and play videos at several points. Check your most important files first. Keep the original device unchanged until you have verified the results and made another backup. A recognizable filename does not prove that a file is complete.
Frequently asked questions
Can I recover every deleted file?
No. Recovery depends on whether the original data is still available. Overwriting, SSD TRIM, encryption, and physical damage can limit recovery. A scan cannot guarantee restoration of every file.
Should I format a drive that asks to be formatted?
Cancel the prompt if you still need its files. Formatting is not a required preparation step for recovery and can reduce your options. First protect the source and check backups, then assess whether software recovery is appropriate.
