External Drive Shows Empty but Space Is Used: Recover Your Files
Asoftech |
Your external hard drive or USB stick opens, but the folder looks empty even though Windows reports used space. This does not always mean your files were deleted. Hidden items, a different folder, access restrictions, or file-system damage can explain the mismatch. Stop saving files to the drive while you investigate.
1. Protect the drive before troubleshooting
Do not format, initialize, or run repair tools that modify the drive before securing important files. Install recovery software on a separate healthy drive and prepare another physical drive for the results. If the device clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or is not detected reliably, stop scanning and seek a professional assessment.
2. Check what is actually missing
Confirm the drive letter, label, and capacity in File Explorer. Open the drive itself, clear any search filter, and check familiar folders. Enable the option to show hidden items in File Explorer's View controls. Search for a known filename or an extension such as .jpg or .docx. If files reappear and open correctly, copy them to another drive immediately.
Used space can include hidden system data and file-system information, so it is not proof that all missing files remain intact. An access-denied message or an encrypted drive needs the appropriate account or unlock key; recovery software is not a substitute for either. Check existing backups and cloud copies before scanning.
3. Recover missing documents and mixed files
Asoftech Data Recovery can scan supported storage for recoverable documents, photos, and other files. Check the product page for supported file systems and download details before choosing the software.
Connect the affected drive to a Windows computer using a stable connection. Cancel any format prompt.
Install and run the software from a different drive. Select the affected drive carefully, checking its letter and capacity.
Run the scan and review the results. Original filenames and folder structures may not always be available.
Save the files you need to another physical drive, never back onto the source.
4. Recover missing photos
If pictures are your priority, review Asoftech Photo Recovery. Connect a memory card through a card reader or attach the external drive, select it in the program, and scan. Preview available photos and save selected results to a different drive. Avoid taking more pictures on an affected card while recovery is pending.
5. Verify your recovered files
Open documents in their usual applications, inspect photos at full size, and play videos at several points. A thumbnail or familiar filename does not guarantee a complete file. Keep the original drive unchanged until you have checked the results and made an additional backup.
Frequently asked questions
Should I format an empty-looking drive?
No, not while you still need its files. Formatting changes the file system and may reduce recovery options. A drive that asks to be formatted is different from a readable drive with an empty folder.
Does used space guarantee recovery?
No. Overwriting, physical damage, encryption, and SSD TRIM can make data unavailable. Recovery software cannot guarantee that every file will be restored. Start with the checks above, then choose Asoftech Data Recovery for mixed files or Asoftech Photo Recovery for photo recovery.
