How to Recover Files After an Interrupted Transfer

A USB cable disconnects halfway through a move. A laptop shuts down while transferring a folder. Or a cut-and-paste operation ends with an error, leaving you unsure where your files went. Stop writing to the affected drives before trying the transfer again. Some files may still be in the original folder; others may already be at the destination.

First, protect the original files
Do not repeat the move, format either drive, or save downloads onto the affected storage.
Keep any files already present at the destination. Do not delete partial transfers while investigating.
Install recovery software on a separate, healthy drive. Prepare another drive with enough space for recovered files.
If a drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or becomes unusually hot, stop using it and consult a recovery specialist.
1. Check both folders before scanning
Open the original folder and the destination folder. Search each location by filename or extension, such as .jpg, .docx, or .mp4. Sort by name and compare file sizes. A folder transfer can finish some files before failing on others, so the contents may be split between two locations.
Check the Recycle Bin if files were separately deleted during cleanup, but do not assume a move places files there. Look for an existing backup or a cloud copy as well. Restore a backup to a healthy drive and open the files to confirm they are complete.
2. Identify which drive needs recovery
If you were copying files: the source normally remains intact. Check it first. If the original opens correctly, copy it to a healthy destination once the connection problem is resolved.
If you were moving files between drives: successfully moved files may have been removed from the source. When a missing file is absent from both folders, start by scanning the source drive, where a complete original may have existed.
If you were moving files within the same drive: search the whole drive before scanning it. A move within one volume commonly changes the file's location rather than copying all its contents.
A partial file at the destination is not proof that the full file arrived. Recovery software cannot reconstruct bytes that were never transferred unless another readable copy can be found.

5. Verify the recovered files
Open recovered documents in their usual applications. View photographs at full size and check videos at several points, including near the end. A familiar filename or thumbnail alone does not establish that a file is complete.
Keep the original storage unchanged until you have checked the results and made an additional backup. For future transfers, copy files, verify the destination copies, and only then remove the originals if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does pressing Cut immediately delete a file?
In Windows File Explorer, Cut marks a file for moving; it does not itself complete the move. If you never pasted, check the original location. If pasting began and failed, check both the source and destination.
Can I recover an incomplete video at the destination?
First look for the complete source video or a backup. Scanning the original storage may find a recoverable copy. Recovering a partial destination file does not necessarily repair it or restore missing footage.
Should I format a drive that Windows cannot open?
No. If you need its files, cancel the format prompt. Formatting changes the storage and can make recovery harder. If the device cannot be detected reliably, seek a specialist assessment before further attempts.
Why might the scan fail to recover my files?
Overwritten data, physical damage, and unreadable storage can prevent recovery. SSD deletion behavior, including TRIM, can also make deleted contents unavailable. No software can guarantee recovery from every interrupted transfer.
