RAW File System Recovery: How to Get Files Back Safely
Asoftech |
If Windows shows a drive as RAW, it cannot read its file system normally. This can follow file system corruption, an interrupted transfer or a failing device. RAW does not mean your files are definitely gone. Protect the source first, then check your options.
1. Stop using the drive
Cancel any prompt to format, initialize or repair the drive. Do not run CHKDSK on a RAW volume or save new files to it. If the drive clicks, disappears repeatedly or has physical damage, power it down and contact a professional recovery service. For valuable data on a stable drive, consider making a sector-level image before scanning.
2. Check the connection and backups
For a USB drive, try a known-good cable, port or card reader without writing to the device. Check that Windows shows the expected capacity. Review File History, cloud storage and external backups. If the drive reports zero capacity or disconnects, software scanning is unlikely to help until the hardware issue is addressed.
3. Scan the correct device
If the drive remains stable and shows the expected capacity, install recovery software on a different healthy drive. Use Asoftech Data Recovery for documents and mixed files, or Asoftech Photo Recovery for pictures and camera media. Check each product page for supported devices and file types. Select the RAW device by capacity and scan it; do not choose the destination drive by mistake.
Save recovered files to a different physical drive with enough free space. Open important documents, inspect photos at full size and play videos at several points. A preview or original filename does not guarantee a complete file. Keep the source unchanged until you have verified the copies.
Frequently asked questions
Should I format a RAW drive before recovery?
No. Formatting changes file system data and can reduce recovery chances. Recover and verify important files first. Only then consider formatting and testing the drive, and replace it if errors continue.
