Files Missing After CHKDSK? How to Find and Recover Them
Asoftech |
If files disappeared after CHKDSK or Windows “Scan and repair,” first stop writing to the affected drive. CHKDSK repairs file system errors; it is not a backup or a file recovery tool. Some missing files may have been moved or disconnected from their original folders, while others may be damaged.
1. Protect the affected drive
Do not run another repair, format the drive, copy new files onto it or install recovery software there. If an external drive disconnects repeatedly, makes unusual noises or has physical damage, stop using it and consult a professional. For important data, make a sector level image before further work if you have the tools and expertise.
2. Check ordinary locations and backups
Search the drive for known filenames and file types, including hidden items. Check the Recycle Bin only if the files were deleted through Windows, and inspect File History, cloud version history and external backups. Copy any files you find to a different healthy drive.
3. Look for FOUND.000 and .CHK files
On some file systems, CHKDSK can save lost file chains as FILE0000.CHK and similar files. A hidden FOUND.000 folder may contain them. Turn on “Hidden items” in File Explorer and, if needed, turn off “Hide protected operating system files” to inspect it. Copy any promising .CHK files to another drive before testing them. A .CHK file may be only a fragment; changing its extension does not repair missing data.
4. Scan for files still missing
If no complete backup or copy exists, check the supported devices and file systems for Asoftech Data Recovery or Asoftech Photo Recovery. Install the software on a different drive, select the affected drive and inspect the scan results. Save recovered documents and photos to another physical drive. A filename or preview does not guarantee an intact file.
Open documents, view photos at full size and play videos at several points. Compare important files with known good copies. Keep the source drive unchanged until you have verified the results. Recovery may fail when data has been overwritten or the device is failing.
Frequently asked questions
Does CHKDSK delete files?
CHKDSK can alter file system records while repairing errors, and files may disappear from their original folders. The damage that prompted a repair may also be responsible. Check backups and any saved .CHK files before scanning the drive.
