How to Recover Deleted Folders in Windows: A Step-by-Step Guide

Asoftech |

Accidentally deleted a work folder, family photo collection, or USB drive directory? To recover deleted folders in Windows, first check the Recycle Bin and existing backups. If no usable copy remains, a data recovery scan may find the underlying files. This guide explains how to choose a recovery method, protect the source drive, and check what you recover.

1. Stop using the drive that lost the folder

Do not recreate the folder, copy new files to the affected drive, or install recovery software there. New writes can overwrite deleted data. If the folder was on your Windows system drive, minimize computer use and prepare recovery on another computer where possible. Cancel any format or initialize prompt. If a drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or is physically damaged, stop using it and seek a professional assessment.

2. Check the Recycle Bin and backups

Search for the folder or a known filename in case it was moved. Open the Recycle Bin; if the deleted folder is listed, select it and choose Restore. Check its original location afterward. If it is missing, look for a backup on another drive or in your cloud account. For OneDrive folders, also check the online recycle bin. File History can help only if it previously backed up the missing content; enabling it after deletion does not create an earlier copy.

3. Scan for deleted documents and mixed files

For folders containing documents, spreadsheets, photos, and other files, review Asoftech Data Recovery. Check the product page for supported file systems and system requirements before downloading. Prepare a separate physical drive with enough free space for recovered files; another partition on the source disk is not a safe destination.

  1. Install the software on a healthy drive separate from the source.
  2. Connect the affected device, then identify it by drive letter, label, and capacity.
  3. Select the affected drive and run a scan. Review the results for the missing folder and its files.
  4. Save selected files to the separate destination drive, keeping the source unchanged.

4. Recover photos from a deleted picture folder

If the missing folder mainly contained pictures, review Asoftech Photo Recovery. Stop taking pictures on an affected memory card and connect it with a card reader. Scan the supported card or drive, preview available photos, and save selected results to another physical drive. A photo preview helps with selection but does not replace checking the saved image at full size.

5. Check recovered files before rebuilding folders

Open important documents, inspect photos, and play videos at several points. Compare the results with a backup or a known file list if available. File contents may be recovered without original names or folder paths, so do not judge success only by the folder tree. Keep verified files in a new destination folder, make a second backup, and leave the original device unchanged until you are satisfied with the results.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a folder after emptying the Recycle Bin?

Possibly, if its data remains available. Emptying the Recycle Bin does not guarantee either successful recovery or immediate destruction of every file. Overwriting, SSD TRIM, encryption, and physical damage can prevent recovery. No scan can guarantee that every deleted folder or file will return.

Why are recovered files missing their original folder names?

The file system information describing names and directory paths may be missing even when some file contents remain. Review the recovered files themselves and organize verified copies manually. If a file will not open, keep the source unchanged and check for a backup; changing its extension does not restore missing data.
