Photos Missing After Transfer to PC? How to Find and Recover Them
Asoftech |
Photos missing after a transfer do not always mean they were deleted. An interrupted import, a different destination folder or a move operation can leave pictures somewhere unexpected. This guide helps you find existing copies before trying photo recovery on a camera SD card or USB drive.
1. Protect the original storage
Stop taking photos and disconnect the source card or USB drive. Do not format it, run a repair tool or copy new files onto it. New writes can overwrite deleted images. If the device is damaged or repeatedly disconnects, seek specialist help before further scanning.
2. Find photos already on the PC
Check the destination you selected, Pictures, Downloads, the camera import folder and cloud storage. Search for JPG, JPEG and your camera’s RAW extension, and sort by date modified as well as date taken. Look inside DCIM on the card without changing it. Check the Recycle Bin and backups too. A failed import may have copied only some pictures.
3. Identify the drive that lost the photos
If you copied files, originals may still be on the card. If you moved them, check both the card and destination. Connect the source to a Windows PC with a reliable reader and confirm its capacity and drive letter. Cancel any format prompt. Install recovery software on an unaffected drive; if photos were deleted from the PC’s system drive, avoid installing there.
4. Scan with Asoftech Photo Recovery
Open Asoftech Photo Recovery, select the drive where the missing photos were stored and start the scan. Check the product page for supported formats and edition details. Inspect the results for the expected pictures; recovered names or folder structures may differ. Recovery depends on the remaining data, so a scan cannot guarantee success.
5. Save elsewhere and check the images
Recover selected photos to a different physical drive, never the source card or disk. Open important files at full size to check for incomplete or damaged images. Confirm the picture count and make a second backup before reusing the original storage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I recover photos after using cut and paste?
Possibly. Check both locations first, then scan the source if the originals were removed and the destination is incomplete. Overwriting can prevent recovery.
Does a thumbnail prove that a photo was recovered?
No. A preview may be intact while the full image is damaged. Open the saved file and inspect the whole picture before considering recovery complete.
