How to Recover Deleted Photos from an SD Card: Safe Steps
Asoftech |
Accidentally deleted camera pictures or formatted an SD card? The photos may still be recoverable, but every new photo or write to the card can replace their data. Work through these checks before trying recovery.
1. Stop using the SD card
Turn off the camera, remove the card and leave it unused. Do not take more pictures, format it again, run a repair utility or copy files onto it. If the card is physically damaged, repeatedly disconnects or is not detected reliably, stop and consider a professional recovery service.
2. Check copies before scanning
Look in your computer Pictures folder, cloud photo library, camera import folder and any backup drive. Also check the Recycle Bin if the pictures were deleted from a computer after import. Copy an existing version to a healthy drive; scanning is unnecessary when a good copy already exists.
3. Connect the card and choose the right drive
Use a compatible card reader on a Windows computer. Note the SD card capacity and drive letter so you do not scan the wrong disk. If Windows asks to format or repair the card, cancel the prompt. Avoid installing recovery software on the affected card.
4. Scan with Asoftech Photo Recovery
Visit Asoftech Photo Recovery, check the current compatibility and download instructions, and install it on your computer drive or another healthy drive. Select the SD card, start a scan and preview the pictures it finds. A preview helps you identify the right images, but a listed filename alone does not prove that a full-size photo is intact.
5. Save and verify recovered photos
Save recoverable photos to a different physical drive, never back to the same SD card. Open important images at full size, check for corruption and compare them with backups. Keep the original card untouched until you have confirmed your copies. If a second scan finds nothing usable, avoid repeated writes and consider specialist help for valuable photos.
Frequently asked questions
Can photos be recovered after formatting an SD card?
Sometimes. A quick format may leave photo data available until new data overwrites it; a full format, encryption or subsequent camera use can reduce the chance substantially. No recovery tool can guarantee results.
