Recover Deleted RAW Photos from an SD Card: A Safe Guide

Asoftech |

RAW camera files such as CR2, CR3, NEF and ARW hold more editing data than a JPEG. If they disappear after deletion or a format, recovery may be possible while their data remains on the card. Follow these steps before taking another picture.

1. Stop using the card

Turn off the camera and remove its SD card. Do not shoot more photos, format it again, run a repair tool or copy files to it. New writes can overwrite lost RAW files. If the card is cracked, repeatedly disconnects or makes a reader unstable, consider a professional service.

2. Check for existing copies

Look for RAW originals in your computer import folder, external backups and cloud storage. A JPEG preview or edited export is useful, but it is not the original RAW file. Check the Recycle Bin if you deleted the files after importing them to Windows.

3. Connect the card to a Windows PC

Use a reliable card reader. Confirm the card capacity and drive letter before scanning. If Windows offers to format or repair it, cancel. Install recovery software on your computer drive, never on the affected SD card.

4. Scan and inspect results

Open Asoftech Photo Recovery, select the SD card and start a scan. Check the current product page for supported formats and edition details. Look for the expected RAW extension and compare file sizes; a filename or thumbnail alone does not establish that the image is complete.

5. Save elsewhere and verify

Recover selected files to a different physical drive. Open several important RAW files in software that supports your camera format and inspect full-size images. Keep the source card unused until your copies are confirmed. If nothing usable appears, avoid further writes and seek specialist help for irreplaceable photos.

Frequently asked questions

Can RAW photos be recovered after formatting?

Sometimes, particularly when the card has not been used since a quick format. A full format, overwriting, encryption or physical failure can prevent recovery. No software can promise a successful result.
