Lightroom Classic Photos Missing? Relink Originals Before Recovery

Asoftech |

A missing-photo warning in Lightroom Classic does not by itself mean a picture was deleted. The catalog may simply point to an old location. Start by finding the original file; if it really is gone, preserve its storage before attempting photo recovery. This guide concerns Lightroom Classic, not the cloud-based Lightroom service.

Separate a broken link from a lost original

A catalog records photo locations and edits; a visible preview is not proof that the original remains available. Note the last known path shown by the missing-photo warning. Check that location in File Explorer or Finder without moving or deleting anything. If you suspect deletion, stop writes to that device. Keep a backup of the catalog on healthy storage before changing links.

Check and reconnect existing files

  1. Reconnect the external drive named in the path. If Windows assigned another drive letter, identify the drive by its contents and capacity rather than guessing. Cancel format or repair prompts. A drive that disconnects or reports repeated read errors needs professional assessment rather than repeated scans.
  2. Search likely import and archive folders for the original filename. Check the file extension, image content and pixel dimensions too: two shoots can reuse the same filename. Do not substitute a small export or a JPEG for a missing RAW original.
  3. For an existing photo, click the missing-photo icon and use Locate to select the verified original. For a moved folder, use Find Missing Folder from its context menu. Menu wording varies with the interface language. Relinking in the existing catalog keeps its association with your edits; avoid blindly reimporting duplicates.
  4. If the original is absent, check the Recycle Bin or Trash, photo backups and the camera card. Copy an intact original to healthy storage, verify it, then relink. A catalog backup alone is not a backup of the separate original images.

Example: an archive folder moved to another drive

The catalog points to an old external drive, but the shoot now lives in an archive folder on a replacement drive. If the full-size originals open there, relink that folder. No recovery scan is needed. If only previews remain and the source photos were deleted, investigate the device that held those originals.

When Asoftech Photo Recovery can help

Asoftech Photo Recovery scans supported storage for lost photos and offers picture previews on Windows. Check current file-system, format and edition support, especially for RAW files. Install on an unaffected drive; connect a stable camera card with a reader if needed. Select the drive letter that lost the originals and start the scan. Save selected results to a different physical drive. The product describes read-only scanning, but saving to the source can still overwrite needed data.

Verify recovered originals before relinking

Open saved pictures at full size and check for damage before pointing the catalog to them. Match each image carefully if recovery changed its name or folder. Asoftech Photo Recovery is not a Lightroom catalog-repair or relinking tool, and recovery does not guarantee restoration of edits. Overwritten data cannot be recovered by scanning; deleted SSD data may also be unavailable after TRIM. Keep the source unchanged until verified originals have another backup.
