How to Organize Recovered Files After Data Recovery
Asoftech |
A successful scan can leave you with unfamiliar filenames, repeated folders and several versions of the same document. Before moving everything back into your usual folders, organize the recovered files on a healthy drive. This workflow helps you find important documents and photos while keeping the original recovery results available.
1. Keep each recovery attempt in its own folder
Save recovered files to a different physical drive from the source. Create a clearly named folder for each attempt, such as USB-recovery-2026-10-14. Record the source device and scan date in a text note on the destination. Keep the original device unchanged; stop if it clicks or repeatedly disconnects and seek a professional assessment.
2. Sort working copies by file type and priority
Keep an untouched copy of the recovery output, then organize a working copy into folders for documents, photos, videos and other files. Start with irreplaceable items rather than sorting every file at once. Use file extensions as a starting point, but verify the content before renaming a file or deciding where it belongs.
3. Review duplicates before deleting anything
Matching names do not prove that two files are identical. Compare file size and content, and retain different versions until you know which one is useful. A recovered date may not reflect the original creation date. Place uncertain duplicates in a review folder instead of removing them immediately.
4. Recover documents or photos with Asoftech
For documents and mixed file types, review Asoftech Data Recovery. Check the product’s supported file systems and system requirements, install it on a healthy drive and scan the affected device. Save selected files to a separate physical drive, then open the saved copies to check them.
For lost pictures, review Asoftech Photo Recovery. Preview available images before saving them elsewhere. Inspect the saved photos at full size; a visible thumbnail does not establish that the complete image is intact. Neither tool guarantees that overwritten or damaged data can be restored.
5. Verify before reusing the device
Open important documents, inspect several photos and play videos at different points. Keep a record of files that are still missing or unusable. Make a second backup of verified results before deciding whether to reuse the original device.
Frequently asked questions
Will changing the file extension fix a recovered file?
Usually no. Renaming a file does not rebuild missing contents. If the extension is wrong, try the correct application on a copy; keep the original recovered file unchanged.
Can I delete duplicate filenames straight away?
No. Files with the same name can contain different content or represent different versions. Compare the saved copies first, keep the best verified version and retain uncertain files until you have a backup.
